Fear, Hope and Your Role in Civilization--An American Month in Review

In the last month or so many newsworthy events transpired in the US . President Obama recently went to Russia , held up pretty well, and seemed respected by politicians and Russian residents alike. Of course, when talking about politics not everyone will agree in how well he may or may not have done. However, many feel he showed hope for a stronger American and Russian relationship. Time will tell us more.

CNN seemed to turn into the Michael Jackson Network for a week or so and the Fox News Channel seemed to be the Sarah Palin TV Network for a bit. In addition, Farrah Fawcett's death coverage was lost in the shuffle of Michael Jackson's unexpected passing. At least this allowed her family to grieve without cameras and paparazzi all around them.

Doors were locked and people were ever vigilant as a serial killer kept South Carolina in fear after the killing of five innocent men and women. Police in North Carolina shot and killed the man before he could slay more unsuspecting people. It was shocking to find out the killer was out on parole after having an extremely lengthy violent criminal past (supposedly 25 pages long). Someone is going to have to answer the question of why he was free to live in our neighborhoods instead of being locked up where he belonged.

The economy in the US continued to struggle, proving some experts wrong in their assessment of an early upturn. Millions without health care or jobs continued to wonder in frustration how soon it would be before the sun shines for them again.

The US turned its war in Afghanistan up a big notch. This is causing anxiety to the families of military service members likely for deployment in "The Stan" as soldiers previously deployed there call it. Our military presence in Iraq however, began a major wind down giving hope to many in Iraq and the United States . Iraqi's feel their country is getting closer to being theirs to fully rule and protect. And many Americans are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel regarding the end of our war there.

All across the globe fear, anxiety, frustration and hope go on day in and day out. It has been that way since the dawn of time. It is part of our human condition. However, this is where civilization comes in. Civilizations true function is to make sure there is more of the hope that breeds success than the fear and anxiety that breeds inaction. Therefore, let us not forget to strive for, and help others along the true road of civilization.

You're right, there is more of the hope that breeds success. This is a great article, Steve. We all have a role in furthering civilization and the behavior that quells fear. Great job.

Thanks Mike I appreciate your comments.  Yeah, it is somewhat daunting to realize we are a part in civilization as it unfolds further, but we are.

I'm with Ken, Steve, a very nice month in review. You gave me some perspectives I had not considered. Farrah Fawcett's family did get the grieve without a deluge of media and other spectacles. I was oblivious to the mass murderer in my front yard, so to speak, until the day before he was killed! Thanks for the month in review. I'm current now. *smile*

Steve, I should type, "Avis Ward in SC" because I am 'from' FL. I have lived here 10 years now and actually love it. It's the weirdest thing to my family as I've no family in the state, they're all in FL.
