Glen Beck--Crazy or Maybe Just Crazy Like a Fox

The Kovacs Perspective

For those not familiar, Glen Beck is a pundit on the Fox News Channel and hosts his own show. He talks about current events but mainly politics. He is relatively new on Fox, coming over from CNN. Since being on Fox his ratings have skyrocketed. Along with being popular, he is very controversial. Many simply cannot stand him while others love him. The people who dislike him think he is over the top in his negative views on our government, our president, and his general gloom and doom commentary. Beck is considered one of President Obama's biggest opponents regarding health care. He also feels the United States government is taking away democracy and marching full force into socialism.

Beck uses theatrics to get his points across. One time, he mimicked the style of the famous movie "The Sound of Music". He dressed in lederhosen (Austrian leather knee breeches), jumped up on his desk and sang an old, popular Austrian song. Somehow, the dance and dress fit somewhere into his political commentary. It was shocking and yet entertaining. Another time he started eating pudding while watching a film clip where a politician was talking about what Beck felt was nonsense. All during the clip and his pudding eating, he made facial gestures and comments mocking the politician. Again, it was shocking, funny and entertaining. Some, however, felt he might be off his rocker! Others however, feel he is on target. Many agree with his political mockery and his view that we are marching into Socialism, along with his opinion our country is on a perilous path.

Recently, he said something that set off a storm of controversy. While he was on another Fox show, he said of President Obama, "This president I think this has exposed himself as a guy over and over and over again who has a deep seated hatred for white people or the white culture, I don't know what it is". Later in the program he said, this guy is, I believe, a racist." A group called Color of Change.org drew attention to this comment and called for a boycott of the show. Some other groups such as Fox News Boycott and Jack and Jill Politics joined the cause and started calling for a boycott as well. Apparently, it has worked. As of this date, according to The Associated Press, 33 advertisers have directed their spots not be aired on Beck's shows. Companies such as Clorox, Wal-Mart, CVS and Sprint are on that list.

Is it fair that most of these companies were in a way, coerced into not advertising with Beck? Sure it is. Is it fair Beck has a network site to jump up on tables, eat pudding and call certain politicians buffoons and the president a racist? Sure it is. Beck has not gone over the top. He is stating his personal opinions, wrong or right as they may be. Let him speak and state those opinions. We should have faith in people sorting it all out. If he really goes off the charts in some way or if he calls for something outrageous, they should pull him from the airwaves.

Some say Beck is emotionally troubled or in plain non-politically correct terms, crazy. Is he? I would not try and seriously answer that question. If he has emotional issues, his co-workers are certain to notice concrete clues and should work to help him. On the other hand, is he simply passionate about what he feels are very real concerns about America and then packages his views in a brilliant manner?

I have faith in letting the people, advertisers, management of Fox, liberals, conservatives and everything in between work it all out regarding a man many say should not be on the airwaves. This is the unique process of freedom we have in the United States, and I am all for it.

Great article. Well done.

What have socialism and democracy got in common? One is a voting system and the other is mainly economic and social.

Personally, I am glad that they went after him and hope they go after Bimbaugh and hush him up as well. Yes, let them have their views but not as radical; however, I can certainly see your point of view as well. I just wish they would leave all the crappy propaganda out of it and quit being such hatists. Obama of all people, in my opinion, is not a racist but a man trying to do his job and admit when he has been wrong ~ I admire most of his attributes. Glad you covered this as I sent an article to my sis and she feels the same as I do but mainly because of Hush Bimbaugh. Blessing and write on! Suz

Hi Sue,

Thanks for reading and writing. This topic has some strong views, both ways and is not going anywhere soon. Beck and other controversial people will be debated for years and years....

As others have pointed out, Beck has a right to say his piece. He does do it in a fairly entertaining way. I think that Glenn is the new leader of the "other side" of course, it is more politically correct when Barry's (ex) Preacher says " God bless America? NO, God D..mn America." When the future first lady says, that shes proud of America for the first time. I mean that does sound sort of racist... And the crowd of Color of change doesn't seem to promote any love of whites. Whether Glenn is crazy or not, he's not automatically wrong.

While I do not support much of the attempts to socialize our nation, and I am not in favor of many things in what we call "government" (which is really politics, and the two are not synonomous) We need to go wayyyyyyyyyyy back beyond the current admninistration to get to the real issues, because they have been around as long or longer than many of the white haired people who sit in our congress. This isn't the time to put restrictions on things, that should have happened before gas got to be over $4.00 per gallon, and before the utilities and mutual fund thieves were allowed to wreck the economy with their corporate greed. As long as we are paying someone $25 + dollars per hour to hook up battery cables on new cars, and health care, pensions, etc. are figured in the price of the car and passed along to the general public, many of whom don't have such good coverage, the greedy ones will end up owning everything, then it will be worth nothing. Sound like the 30's? The government can't print enough money to bail out the poeople who really need it, and that's the average working Americans who can't afford the inflated prices we have put on everything.

It is funny you bring up $4.00 gasoline prices.  In my view, that had a big part in our economic downward spiral. When prices hit that high, do people not realize how that hurt our economy! From the average person not being able to spend on restaurants, clothing, electronics etc  like they used to and manufacturers spending so much more to make things, to truckers shipping our food etc etc--where was some restriction or help before that occurred.  We certainly have some issues to straighten out!  Anyway, thanks Doc for sharing your your views.

Everybody in America enjoys the right to say stupid things as long as it is not libelous or slanderous. I call a Cuban friend of mine Ricastra Bunker because she yells like Ricky Ricardo, is dictorial like Fidel Castro, and is prejudice like Archie Bunker. She once said Obama can't visit Africa because he would be tempted to climb a banana tree. If Obama was dictator of Cuba and she said it there she might now be in prison eating a diet of only bananas. Fortunately or unfortunately, she, Beck, or Limbaugh can absurdly criticize our leaders. Fortunately or unfortunately, companies have the right to boycott. Fortunately, in the end everything works out in America because of these freedoms.

Steve,

Excellent job!  I agree with what you say.  I just wish everyone else could.  I am concerned how long we will be able to voice our opinions though.  I say to Glenn Beck and Rush -- keep it up.   With what is in the works now, we lose that freedom.

Glen Beck has the right to say his piece and companies have the right to withdraw ad dollars. Individuals have the right to NOT vote for a crook or to NOT shop at a certain store, but not many people care enough.

Great article, Steve.

I used to watch Glen...before he got his new show. After getting his new show he has just gone way over the top! He is so animated I just can't stand to watch any more. He must have gotten a very large paycheck because his head has swelled to twice it's original size...I used to really like his show, but like I said...he's just too over the top for me now!

The real underlying issue here is Capitalism. Politicians are NOT capitalist. No matter what political group they side with. A politicians only goal is to have a career that lasts. America will fall just like all the other great civilizations of the world due to politicians. Every great civilization in the history of the world has failed and for one reason only...none have ever been built on pure capitalism! All have been ruled by politicians who have their own agendas. The only way for America to survive is to replace all politicians with business men and women. A business person acts only to stimulate the free exchange of business. This is the only way to a solid everlasting economy. PURE CAPITALISM is the only for this country or any other to survive indefinitely.

Interesting point about pure-capialism being the way to go regardng a solid everlasting economy--I agree.  Thanks for writing.
