Getting A Dog Can't Be All Bad--Proof That Dogs Are Man's Best Friend

The Kovacs Perspective
81 year old Nick Nichols took his dog everywhere. Lady, a Golden Retriever was his wife's dog who had died a few years ago. Since then, the dog had become Nick's comfort. She rode in Nick's black Lincoln Town Car as if it was a limousine as he chauffeured the pooch all around town.
On April 8, 2010 Nichols' family reported him missing. There wasn't a trace of him or the four or five year old Golden Retriever anywhere. People looked and tried to figure out where the two could have disappeared to. Just a little over a week after they went missing, a neighbor was walking his dog in a farm field about a mile from Nick's house when he heard a dog barking. He investigated, and noticed Nick laying in the field, dead, and Lady right next to him barking and protecting him. "She didn't move; she wouldn't even come to us. It was almost like she was still protecting him, " said Nick's son, Terry Nichols.
Chances are Nichols died within a day or so of leaving his home and evidence shows that the dog never left his side for that entire week. Nichols got the dog for his wife in 2004 or 2005 when she mentioned she wanted a dog. They got Lady when she was six months old from a family who could no longer care for the dog. Nicks wife, who died of cancer in 2006 did a good job of caring for Lady and when she died so did Nick. It seems when Nick died, Lady did the same for him.

This is a great story, and dogs are truly best friends. I have a golden retriever named Sputnik who, in spite of the occasional digging in the trash, would do anything to protect me. I try to remember that when disciplining him. Thanks for sharing this.Sputnik--funny...I know what you mean about discipling and trying to remember that they'd do anything for us and like us when we don't even like ourselves!!--thanks Mike.
